Are There Any Warnings about the Use of Cosmetics and Tanning Lotions?

Many people with psoriasis use cosmetics and self tanning lotions to cover up signs of this disease. These products cover up signs of psoriasis to a great extent and boosts the patients self confidence. However, these products come with some warnings. Cosmetics designed for people with psoriasis contain active ingredients like coal tar, salicylic acid etc.

While these ingredients are generally considered safe and mild, they can cause flare ups at times. This is especially true for people with severe psoriasis. Cosmetics and cover ups should not be used on raw, itchy, bleeding skin. They can aggravate the condition and cause severe irritation and inflammation. Another point to remember is that a product which worked for one person need not work the same way for another. A trial and error process is required to identify cosmetics and tanning lotions which suit your skin type. If any product causes irritation, discontinue its use at once.

Camouflaging the psoriasis wounds with cosmetics and tanning lotions work well for people who are not suffering from severe psoriasis. Red lesions or dry skin can be easily controlled and covered up but severe conditions like raised sores or scaly skin cannot be effectively camouflaged. It is best to decide on a product in consultation with your doctor.
