What Are Biological Drugs for Psoriasis?

Biological drugs are designed to target the specific disorder without interfering with other biological functions. This makes these drugs much safer to use. Biological drugs are created from living cells. There are a number of new biologic drugs that can be helpful in treatment of Psoriasis. Some of them are:

  •             Infliximab (Remicade)
  • Alefacept (Amevive)
  • Etanercept (Enbrel)
  • Efalizumab (Raptiva)

These biological drugs can target different steps that are responsible for Psoriasis.  The following targets are blocked so that Psoriasis can be treated:

Activating T cells, blocking memory of T-cells, blocking the T cells migration into the skin, blocking conversion of one cytokine into another

These biological drugs are prescribed for the patients who have moderate or severe plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. The biological drugs are effective in psoriasis when used along with topical treatments or phototherapy. According to the studies, Enbrel, Humira, and Remicade are shown to be safe and effective when taken with methotrexate. These biological drugs are taken either by injection or IV infusion. By blocking the T cells from replicating at the abnormal speed these biological drugs help in treating swelling, inflammation, redness etc. Some of the rare side effects that are revealed through studies are respiratory problems, blood disorders, flu like symptoms etc.
