Psoriasis is a skin condition that is chronic but not contagious. It is characterized usually by itchy, raised and red patches of dry skin also referred to as plaque. Psoriasis can also look like flaky scales that are usually white to grayish in color. Psoriasis can vary from mild to severe. It can also vary in shape, in size and the specific location in the body where it is seen.

Psoriasis is usually found on the elbows and knees but can also be present in the other parts of the body such as the scalp, the neck, the legs, torso and in more other parts of the body, depending on severity.

How is Erythrodermic Psoriasis Treated?

A person should seek medical attention as soon as the signs and symptoms of erythrodermic psoriasis come into picture. This health condition is chronic and critical and thus it needs a monitored medical attention. The patient has to be hospitalized first because in erythrodermic psoriasis usually, the patient experiences hypothermia which means lowering of body temperature and fluid loss which means loss of fluids and proteins from the body. Hospitalizing the patient can work towards stabilization of body temperature and the health expert can take steps involving stopping malnutrition furthermore. As per the situation and the complication involved the patient will be given antibiotics, nutritional supplements and diuretics. When the patient’s condition is very critical the doctor advises complete bed rest.

Some other means of treatment that bring relief to the patient is use of wet dressings. This helps in cooling the skin and softening the inflamed tissue. However, this is beneficial in the early stages.

Low dose of following drugs will also be helpful in treatment of erythrodermic psoriasis.

  1. acitretin
  2. methotrexate
  3. cyclosporine

Many times the patient who has recovered may again have this. In that case, the patient must be dedicated to take the prescribed medications for psoriasis. It is also important to see the doctor at regular intervals to prevent erythrodermic psoriasis.
