Can Obesity cause Psoriasis? |
According to recent studies, scientists have found out a link between obesity and psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin disease, or more precisely an autoimmune disorder which can affect anyone at any point of time. As per the results of a recently conducted study in one of the leading university it has been noted that patients who had normal BMI or body mass index at the age of 18 gained weight after being affected by psoriasis. Almost 71% of the affected population seemed to gain weight. The red scaly patches which are characteristic of psoriasis can be found in genitals, buttocks, armpits or under the breasts. As it is mostly seen in skin folds, it has been found out that those who are overweight are not only prone to this disorder, but it may take longer than usual in the healing process. The skin folds can lead to both sweating and chafing. This means that the healing process will take some time. Doctors have found it extremely problematic to treat the psoriasis lesions. A study which appeared in one of the leading health magazines clearly stated that if a person weighed 20% more that what he should as per his height, he is actually doubling the chances of being affected by psoriasis. The problem with obesity is that you not only increase your chances of being affected, but you also have to wait for a long time until you are fully recovered. |
