Can Oral Prescriptions Have Serious Side Effects For Psoriasis?

Oral medications for treating the symptoms of Psoriasis are suggested only when the disease reaches its severe stage. These medicines are effective at alleviating Psoriasis symptoms; however, most of them have a long list of side effects. This is the reason why topical medications are always given preference over the oral medication to treat this disorder. The means of topical medication includes, medicated shampoos and creams which leave minimal or zero side effects on the body.

Some common examples of popular oral prescription medicines for Psoriasis are Methotrexate, Cyclosporines and Tegison. Out of these three, Methotrexate bears the maximum toxicity which if taken in an over-dose can cause severe damages to the liver. Further, this medicine can cause permanent damages to the kidney, if taken for a prolonged period of time. In addition, it becomes extremely injurious if consumed by people already suffering from a kidney disorder. It can further trigger serious reactions in the central nervous system of the body when taken via intrathecal route. Cyclosporines on the other hand, are known for causing serious disorders like increased blood pressure.   Acitretin is yet another strong medication which can cause serious abnormalities to the growing fetus. Therefore, the patient should never plan a pregnancy while using this drug.
