What Types of Medications are used to Treat Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a disease that is complex to cure because one has to attack the disease in two ways. One is to attack it on the surface (topical) while the other one attacks the root cause of the problem.

Psoriasis is an incurable, yet non contagious disease. However, one can be treated according to each symptom, for instance, treating the dryness and inflammation of the skin patches. Recent development in the field of Psoriasis research show that there are some medications that are orally taken to help ease the symptoms of the disease. These medicines are usually taken not solely but with other prescriptions as well:

  1. Cyclosporine. This drug is an immunosuppressive drug. This is normally prescribed to patients with severe Psoriasis. The drug goes to the root of the problem, the autoimmune system.
  2. Methotrexate. This drug is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Psoriasis can also manifest in the joints, like an arthritic disease. This drug treats the Psoriasis Arthritis.
  3. Acitretin. This more commonly used drug to help ease Psoriasis does not, however, treat all types of Psoriasis.

Check with your doctors first before taking these medications to know some restrictions associated to Psoriasis. These medications need prescription prior to purchase.
